Designing mobile booking flows that close the conversion gap
In 2016, mobile traffic accounted for 60% of travel searches but only 20% of bookings—a significant conversion gap that cost Expedia millions in lost revenue. Users searched on their phones—comparing flights, browsing hotels, building mental itineraries. But when it came time to book, they switched to desktop. The mobile experience was technically functional but psychologically exhausting. Desktop felt safer, even when inconvenient.
Measured Impact
Post-launch, mobile conversion improved measurably:
Call propensity reduced from 10% to 5% (50% reduction)
Users calling support to complete bookings decreased significantly
